Peterson Energy Consultants has been in the thermal contracting and energy efficiency business for over 30 years. We have seen many "fix-alls" and "cure-alls" come and go. Many of the green insulation and air-sealing practices that we utilize today, we have been doing for over 20 years because there is practical building science behind it.
One of the biggest leaders in this industry for implementing and main-streaming the building sciences that relate to energy efficiency, health and safety issues has been the Building Performance Institute. The BPI certification is required by all of the utility energy conservation programs that we are involved with, such as the Act on Energy program in Illinois and the Laclede Gas finance program in Missouri.
Contractors who take the time to get certified in the disciplines offered by BPI give their clients a distinct advantage. These contractors look at the home as an entire system. Rather than looking only at insulation or heating/cooling as a way to solve energy and comfort issues, we are trained to analyze other aspects that may contribute to the problem such as air leakage, duct leakage, and pressure imbalances to name a few.
